My buddy, Lee Shelly of Fresh Perspective Photography, recently invited me to shoot a Weezer concert with him at the Christina Mall in Newark, Del. The concert was a promotion for the grand opening of a new Microsoft Store in the mall, and the first several hundred people in line for the ribbon cutting received free tickets.
I graciously accepted Lee’s offer to shoot the show, by which I mean I barely suppressed yelping “Oh my God! Yes, yes, yes!” as the 9th-grade Weezer fanboy that lives inside my body did a backflip at the thought of backstage passes. The concert lived up to my hopes, with the band playing the most popular selections from all of their albums. I even had an opportunity to meet the band after the show. Yep, that’s how I roll.
The coolest moment of the day came during the middle of the show when Weezer’s lead singer surprised the crowd with an impromptu traveling roadshow (more on that below). Enjoy the shots!
Midway through the concert, Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo decided to take his act on the road, literally. Much to the chagrin of the event security staff, Cuomo hopped off stage and walked directly through the crowd, all while continuing to play his guitar.
Not satisfied with making the fans’ day by walking among them during a show, Cuomo hiked up an embankment behind the concert venue, and proceeded to play part of the set from the shoulder of I-95, bringing traffic on the highway to a momentary standstill.
Needless to say, the crowd lost its collective mind.
Check out many more of my high-resolution shots from the concert in my set on Flickr.
