Each year, the public park in my backyard plays host to a vibrant festival for members of the local Cambodian-American community. Unfortunately, Mother Nature has played spoiler for the past two years, literally raining on the parade. Last year, heavy winds and lightning forced organizers to shut the event down early, which was heartbreaking considering how much time and effort this tight-knit group puts into organizing the festivities.
Rain once again threatened to drown out this year’s event, but the Cambodian community pulled together, waited out the showers and put on a fantastic show for everyone who attended, including the Cambodian Ambassador to the United States His Excellency Mr. Heng Hem. Decked out in colorful costumes, performers of all ages acted out traditional dances and elaborate ceremonies, while food vendors cooked up regionally-inspired cuisine. Kids frolicked, tweens texted, adults danced and everyone involved had a great time.
Overall, it was a really cool event, made all the more special by the resiliance and hospitality demonstrated by the Cambodian community. ជល់មួយ លើកដាច់ !
